The Under-Ranked: “No Strings Attached”

This weekend, director Ivan Reitman of such classic comedies as Stripes, Meatballs and Ghostbusters will release his newest film, No Strings Attached. In the film, Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher play two friends who decide to go for a friends-with-benefits situation. While it starts off as harmless fun, the duo soon realizes that there may not be such a thing as just harmless sex. While the idea of friends becoming something more may seem somewhat generic, the talented cast suggests something possibly different. So before you check out No Strings Attached this weekend, maybe give some of these under-ranked films from its stars a chance.

Throw away all your negative preconceived notions about this movie. Steve Carell’s haircut looks awful and the trailers don’t make it seem like anything special, but it’s actually a very solid comedy.

If I possessed the brainpower (and several lifetimes), I would compose a treatise expounding on the philosophical and psychological motivations behind the rationale for every one of my matchup decisions. My dizzying insight and erudition regarding film and the human condition would penetrate deep into the core of why, for example, Bandidas really is better than The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. With each comment, my soul would be laid bare and another piece of the puzzle to discovering the meaning of our place in this vast and cold universe would be revealed.

“FAIL” vs. “FTW”

For many of us, comparing two movies goes back to childhood conversations at lunch or on the bus ride from school. “Top Gun is a lot cooler than Ghostbusters!” “Is not!” “Is too!” And so it went. After a while, it seems that most of these comparative conversations really only arose around what are often referred to as “genre” movies. Star Trek vs. Star Wars, Batman vs. Superman, James Bond vs. Jason Bourne, etc. The addictive brilliance of Flickchart is that it not only revives this head-to-head format for appraising films, but it expands it to all movies. At least, it ought to be the impetus for lively discourse.
