HBO has announced that Michael Douglas and Matt Damon will star in Behind the Candelabra, a biopic being directed by Steven Soderbergh. The film will focus on the relationship between flamboyant musician Liberace (Douglas) and his younger live-in lover, Scott Thorson (Damon).

One thing you can say about Soderbergh: He likes to keep his projects varied, if not his casts. Douglas previously worked with the director in Traffic, and Matt Damon seems to be replacing George Clooney as Soderbergh’s go-to guy (having worked with him most recently in Contagion).

Behind the Candelabra is from a script by Water for Elephants writer Richard LaGravenese. Production is due to start summer 2012 in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Palm Springs.

The only flaw to Contagion - if it is a flaw in the eyes of director Steven Soderbergh – is that there is very little audience connection to the characters. The film is framed as if we are looking down and instead of seeing people, watching growth inside of a petri dish. And it fits to some degree because Contagion acts not as a story, but a cold, lab-engineered, sterilized cautionary reminder of human behavior. Read the rest of this entry »

This is a bit of a companion piece to another article I wrote about movies I don’t love, despite containing some great scenes. In this case, I have movies that I do love, despite the fact that I can acknowledge them to have flaws. These are not necessarily the “Guilty Pleasures” – movies that you know are bad, but love anyway. These are films that are generally considered to be at least pretty good; they all rank in the global Top 2000 on Flickchart, and three rank in the global Top 200. They all rank in my personal Top 200, and two of them are in my Top 20. One is a Best Picture Oscar winner. Three of the other four were nominated for at least one Oscar, and the fifth made many critics’ Top 10 lists the year it came out. I love them all, but I can admit each of them has certain “issues”. Here they are, in ascending order on my Flickchart:

Thank you, Coen Brothers, because this was shaping up to be one of the most soulless slates of Christmas wide releases ever assembled. True Grit has a 96% on RottenTomatoes after 73 reviews and stars Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon and Josh Brolin.

I really like Jack Black, but this reimagining of the classic story looks pretty terrible. Emily Blunt, Amanda Peet and Jason Segel round out the very solid cast.

How do October 15th’s new films stack up against some of the best movies of all time?

Red – PG-13 – watch the trailer

Red movie reviews and rankings

Red movie discussions and rankings

Red has a great cast (Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, Helen Mirren, etc) and is getting pretty strong reviews. Be sure to watch Zach Galifianakis’sBetween Two Ferns” with Bruce. It’s perfect in every way and includes the best back-to-back Diff’rent Strokes/Look Who’s Talking joke known to man.

By now, we’ve all had a good chuckle at the leaked Paramount memo showcasing the studio’s terrible slate of upcoming projects, including kiddie caper comedy Dunderheads and the criminally unnecessary Zoolander 2. Funny stuff, for sure, but I can’t help feel a tad slighted by this document’s instant popularity. After all, I’ve been coming up with shitty film ideas on my Twitter account, @MoviesIWannaSee, for almost a year now! Are you really gonna sit there and tell me my idea for a Jake Gyllenhaal Woodsy Owl biopic isn’t as hilariously stupid as Baywatch: The Movie? That’s cold.

To try and help remind people that I am the original shitty movie machine, I’ve compiled a brand new special list for Flickchart of wretched cinematic visions I honestly hope come to pass in my lifetime. Hopefully you Flickcharters will enjoy this selection of ideas, but honestly I’m hoping more that someone from Paramount accidentally reads this between cocaine snorts off the ol’ iPad and gives me a development deal. Fingers crossed!
