Dragons. Are there any cooler creatures in all of mythology? Unfortunately, in the world of celluloid, these great creatures of imagination have not really gotten their due. (At least, not in live-action cinema; why I have not yet seen How to Train Your Dragon is still beyond me.)

Is there any live-action film in which dragons have truly come off as cool as they deserve? Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire wasn’t too bad, but the dragons aren’t the stars. As I impatiently await the day when Peter Jackson brings his vision of the ultimate dragon, Smaug, to life in The Hobbit, I think about other dragon-themed movies that I have enjoyed in the past. None of them are deserving enough to be called “great”, but I’m very forgiving of movies I want to like. In one of these cases, I was the perfect age to see a dragon with real presence brought to life on the big screen – even if the movie he inhabited was far from perfect. Without further adieu, I present, in ascending order on my Flickchart, my picks for Guilty Pleasures starring dragons.

In This Corner…

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, which means many people will be turning their movie-watching attention to a lot of those feel-good holiday favorites. But for some, this is the most wonderful time of the year… for busting some heads. Nothing says peace on Earth like a good, old-fashioned, blood-pumping action flick, and this year we’re entering the Reel Rumbles ring with a couple of the best. So get ready to deck the halls (and some thugs). It’s time for Die Hard vs. Lethal Weapon.

Who hasn’t ever been in a heated debate with a friend over who would win in a battle: Cowboys or Aliens? Well thankfully, a huge new movie is coming soon to help us finally know.

I have a sneaking suspicion the cowboys will win in the movie, based off the star-power they have (Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig), but what about the battle of Cowboy movies vs Alien movies?

Well, let’s break it down. Here’s my stab at answering the eternal question of who wins in a battle between Cowboys and Aliens (movies). These are my top-5′s in the Western and Alien Invasion Movie genres:

Some of the world’s deadliest people – soldiers, mercenaries, killers, rapists – find themselves dropped into the middle of a hostile jungle. Soon, they realize they are being hunted… and that they are no longer on our world. So begins Predators; a sequel to the original, singular-titled, Arnold Schwarzenegger-starring sci-fi action hit from 1987. And as it turns out, it’s become the only sequel to that movie that’s truly worth the effort.

Starring: Adrien Brody (The Pianist; King Kong), Topher Grace (Spider-Man 3; TV’s “That 70′s Show”), Alice Braga (City of God; I Am Legend), Walton Goggins (TV’s “The Shield”), Oleg Taktarov (Righteous Kill; Bad Boys II), Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix; TV’s “CSI”) and Danny Trejo (Planet Terror; Heat)

Directed by: Nimród Antal (Armored; Vacancy)

So, how does Predators measure up? I’ll use the Flickchart ranking method to see how…

I saw this in theaters and absolutely loved it. Once our heroes commented on how “tight” the first girls they see are when they make it back to the 80′s (exactly as I was in my head just a split second earlier), I knew I was going to enjoy the ride.

Just when you thought it was safe to head back to the Flickchart Blog, another Reel Rumbles is here to determine once and for all what is scarier: a murderous great white shark on the loose in a small fishing village or a lone member of a mysterious alien race haunting the jungles of Central America? Separated by twelve years and undeniable advancements in special effects, this looks, on paper, to be a match for the ages. But is it really that close? Does testosterone-fueled action and a Die Hard pedigree trump master filmmaking and deep characterization? Read on and find out in Jaws vs. Predator.
