10. Vampire in Brooklyn (1995): I almost called my upcoming auto-biography “Vampirism Visionary: The Eddie Murphy Story.” Just look at my profile pic. That’s a sexy vampire. Why do you think I’ve been making movies for 12 year old girls lately? Once they’re as old as Bella Swan, they’ll be all over me.
9. Tooth Fairy (2010): I regret passing this one up; Dwayne gave a hell of a performance in it. The producers wouldn’t switch from hockey to golf, and I just figured my daughters loved me enough already after I made Imagine That.
8. No Holds Barred (1989): I had a thing for wrestling in the 80’s, and this movie captured that moment in my life better than any other. It’s an absolute gem.
7. Purple Rain (1984): Prince was this close to playing Billy Ray Valentine in Trading Places but decided to do this instead. I think it worked out well for both of us.
6. Dr Strangelove (1964): If this movie (and Peter Sellers) didn’t exist, my career would’ve been over in 1995. Its influence on me is that strong. Thank God fat-suit technology had become advanced enough to realize my vision.
5. Xanadu (1980): Olivia Newton-John inspired me to write “Party All the Time.” Watching it with Rick James will forever be my most treasured movie moment.
4. Hudson Hawk (1991): As you can tell by looking at film #10 on my list, movies based off of story ideas from actors are gold. I’m thinking of remaking this as a PG-rated family comedy, with one of my daughters playing Andie MacDowell’s moustache.
3. Mo’ Better Blues (1990): It’s just a good movie. Spike, Denzel and Wesley knocked it out.
2 & 1. Beyond the Poseidon Adventure (1979) and Jaws: The Revenge (1979): Michael Caine is my hero. He had an amazing run of “paycheck up front, please” movies in the 70’s and 80’s but none better than these two. I cry every time I see that one scene in Jaws 4. I can’t think of anybody better to model a career around. The things he did for a paycheck, while still retaining his dignity into old age are amazing. I can’t wait for fifteen years from now when I’m playing bad-ass butlers and have finally regained some respect.
