Bats: R, Throws: R. How Acquired: Traded for a player to be named later. I hold a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Louisville, earned in history. I have lived with Crohn's disease since 2005, and chronic depression since my youth. I bring into each film that I view a world view shaped by those and other parts of my background. I try to be mindful of the socio-political themes and implications of movies, intended or otherwise, and that surely shows in my blog pieces. I also love doughnuts.

And might I add Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Special, Spiral, Moon, King of California, Sunshine Cleaning, Brick, Amelie, Dear Zachary, The Cove, (Untitled), The Pianist, The Karate Kid, The Shawshank Redemption, The Big Lebowski, One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, Blade Runner, Shutter Island, Insomnia, Fido, Goodfellas, and I’m sure there’s plenty more worth watching, pending on what mood you’re in. There’s also a bunch of good tv on Instant Watch now.

(list is subject to change in time, but they are all currently instant, and mostly great/good)

Brandt, the piece that I submitted originally had the following preface:

“It would be easy to recommend The Seventh Seal (which, incidentally, I do think you should stream), but I’d like to draw your attention to some of the lesser-known, more overlooked gems that I’ve found in the Netflix Watch Instantly library. I have Crohn’s disease (diagnosed in 2005), and spend a lot of time running in and out of the bathroom, sleeping at odd hours (if at all). I easily identify with stories featuring people whose lives have come off the rails. There are people in search of answers; my people rarely even have the questions.”

I’m not sure what happened to it, but I hope you see that I am not ignorant of the “obvious” recommendations. Rather, the emphasis was on the little gems that I suspect many viewers overlook in their search for blockbusters and classics.

    Shows:
the real Avatar The Last Airbender Seasons(books) 1-3
    and every single Futurama episode

@Chris in DC – I appreciate your enthusiasm, but I’m not clear from the titles of the shows how they fit with the theme of the five selections I recommended.
